How FLAG calculation works with us?

On the first year, our expert does the calculation together with you. This ensures that afterwards you’ll have both the know-how and the tools to continue cost-effectively on your own.

Data Collection & Validation

Based on your Scope 1–3 accounting, we identify data related to land-use change, land use, and removals. These are assigned specific FLAG emission factors.

Calculation & Categorization

Biocode calculates emissions, and you can review results divided between Energy/Industry and FLAG emissions in line with SBTi and GHG Protocol criteria.

Continuous Reporting

Frequently Asked Questions about SBTs and FLAG Guidance

Setting Science-Based Targets is always voluntary. However, your buyer or investor may require you to join the initiative.

If you are committed to setting SBTs and your company operates in the agricultural, food and beverage, forest and paper industry, or retail sectors, there’s a high chance that you will be required to follow the FLAG Guidance to participate in the initiative. This applies to companies that meet at least three of the following criteria:

  • Employ over 250 employees
  • Have a turnover of over €50 million
  • Have total assets of over €25 million
  • Operate in the land-use sector

FLAG guidelines provide specific criteria for setting Science-Based Targets in the land-use sector, addressing emissions from:

  • land-use change
  • land management, and
  • carbon removals and storage.

Biocode’s calculator automatically calculates both Energy/Industry (E/I) and FLAG emissions and presents them clearly as separate categories.

  • E/I emissions come mainly from fossil fuel use and industrial processes, including energy production, heating, and transportation.
  • FLAG emissions cover all emissions and removals related to land use, forestry, and agriculture—such as soil carbon emissions, the environmental impact of feed production, and potential carbon sinks.
