Biocode Impact is a novel online service that allows food companies to become climate smart by tracking, improving, and demonstrating the climate performance of products.
Biocode Impact, a newly launched online service by Biocode, is a cloud-based tool for food companies to track and reduce their products’ carbon footprints at scale.
The service offers a cost-efficient way for food companies to get digestible information about their products’ climate impacts, all the way from individual farm-level production of raw materials to packed products at a retailer. The science-based assessments allow companies to obtain valuable insights on their products’ climate performance with ease, without cutting corners or compromising the robustness of the results.
The tool supports companies in continual climate performance improvements by collaboratively assessing annual product life-cycle emissions, and by identifying the most emission-intensive life-cycle stages and factors contributing to a product’s overall carbon footprint. These insights enable, for example, the comparison and prioritisation of emission reduction measures for effective decarbonisation. The online service is constantly improved, and new features are periodically added.
In the wake of all the successful carbon footprint assessment projects with our existing clients, and after multiple months of research and development work, we have brought all the expertise and hard work together into one single service. An industry-changing tool that allows food companies to level up their climate actions and to become climate smart brands. Our service is at the forefront of developing markets for sustainability services as food companies are increasingly looking for scalable solutions to reduce their Scope 3 emissions.Joni Rajanen, CTO of Biocode
The service includes an innovative way for food companies to demonstrate that their product emission reductions are in line with limiting global heating to below 2°C, as set in the Paris Agreement. The Climate Smart product tag, adaptable digitally and physically by companies whose products’ carbon footprints are tracked with Biocode Impact and reduced annually by 3% on average, not only allows companies to demonstrate their efforts in reducing emissions but also allows them to stand out as a climate smart food brand.
The demand for more knowledge about the climate impact of food is constantly growing. Therefore, continuous carbon footprint improvements and verified emission reductions are essential when communicating to stakeholders that the company is addressing the climate crisis.
There haven’t been easy ways for food brands to prove their products are truly climate smart. The same applies to consumers and business partners: they’ve had a hard time identifying whether the food items they buy are made by companies that want to limit climate change to well below 2°C by not only reducing emissions in their own processes but across their product value chains. With the use of the Climate Smart product tag, it is now possible. Our purpose is to improve the planetary conditions for life, and we do this by helping food companies make more climate smart products with Biocode Impact and getting the message out to stakeholders.Ernesto Hartikainen, CEO of Biocode
